mobileSQUARED unveils dynamic consumer trends data for mobile healthcare

Mobile consumer trend model identifies £1.14 billion market for healthcare payments

Berkshire: 7 February, 2012 – mobileSQUARED today announces the launch of Mobile Healthcare Trends – a dynamic database which provides granular data and forecasts on consumer usage habits towards the mobile healthcare market in the UK.

Mobile Healthcare Trends provides critical information on consumer attitudes towards different elements of mobile healthcare – identifying the actual number of mobile consumers active in each area searchable by device type, gender, age, geography and income.

The healthcare database is built on mobileSQUARED’s groundbreaking Mobile Consumer Trends database – which tracks and forecasts consumer usage habits towards the mobile internet, mobile apps, mobile commerce, opt-in messaging, and mobile advertising reach and engagement throughout the US and UK.

The healthcare data reveals that over 8.7 million users are interested in paying for their prescriptions via their mobile, from a total of almost 40 million mobile users that state they would welcome mobile health-based services on their mobile device.

The average cost for a prescription in the UK is £7.40. According to NHS Information Centre data, the average person in the UK receives 17.8 prescriptions per year*. That amounts to an average prescription spend of £131.72 per person per annum. When applied to Mobile Healthcare Trends, the 8.5 million users will generate £1.14 billion in revenues, accounting for only 13% of total annual prescription spend of £9 billion.

“The data shows that UK consumers want to use their mobile device as part of their healthcare, whether to communicate with their local surgery, make an appointment or pay for a prescription,” says Nick Lane, chief strategy analyst at mobileSQUARED. “Using mobile to communicate with patients will have a massive impact on savings for the NHS, and so the role mobile will play in healthcare has to be taken seriously today.”

Using the new database, mobileSQUARED is able to highlight the following mobile healthcare information:

  • Number of male iPhone users that would make appointments, 1Q2012: 2.34 million
  • Number of female Android users that would pay for their prescription using mobile phone, 2Q2012: 717,625
  • Number of 25-34 year olds that that would welcome appointment reminders, 3Q2012: 9.5 million
  • Number of 55-64 year olds that that would welcome appointment reminders, 4Q2012: 6.6 million
  • Number of users in London that will pay for their prescription using mobile phone, 1Q2013: 1.8 million
  • Number of users in Scotland that would receive appointments reminders to their mobile phone, 2Q2013: 3.6 million

Mobile Healthcare Trends costs £495 +VAT. The database provides data on mobile users willing: to purchase a prescription with their device, make appointments, communicate with Drs and local healthcare centres. The data is segmented by device type, location, gender, age and socio-economic.
