mobileSQUARED provides specialist research which enables brands, agencies, the public sector and mobile industry to access, and engage with, the mobile consumer. Together, we conduct primary research with a focus on delivering forward-looking data around mobile device usage on mobile web, app, marketing, advertising and commerce, to help you identify and respond to fast-changing mobile trends.

mobileSQUARED was launched in 2009 by leading mobile industry analyst Nick Lane, and has since been bolstered with expertise from the mobile industry in Gavin Patterson, and Jo Lane from the world of media. In 2011, Caroline Baldwin joined as a reporter & researcher to drive the company’s weekly and monthly titles, Becci Price heads up our marketing & PR, while our client services manager is Aman Toor.

mobileSQUARED has approx. 40 years combined experience researching the mobile communications industry – starting in 1996 when Nick joined Philips Tarifica, and Gavin joined Baskerville Communications, publisher of Global Mobile, 3G Mobile and Mobile Media. Both went on to be Principal Analysts at Informa Telecoms & Media, researching emerging mobile industry trends and forecasting the latest usage patterns.

Nick Lane, chief strategy analyst & head of client services

Nick Lane, chief stratefy analyst and head of client services, mobileSQUAREDNick launched mobileSQUARED in response to the need for accurate and robust research, analysis and data for companies looking to grasp a more detailed understanding of a sector or market. Areas of specialty include mobile marketing and advertising, mobile internet and social media, apps, content and messaging, as well as mobile technology.

Nick has worked on countless client projects some of which have been released into the public domain, including a number of reports on mobile advertising and marketing, social media and messaging.

Before setting up mobileSQUARED, Nick was a principled principal analyst at Informa, covering the mobile content and advertising space. He was instrumental in developing the world's first mobile advertising forecasts and publishing an industry-defining report on the subject, as well as market-leading reports on mobile entertainment, mobile technology, and understanding the mobile consumer.

The transition into an analyst was based on years as a mobile journalist, where Nick worked on leading titles Mobile Media, Global Mobile and 3G Mobile, as well as breaking stories on the Global Mobile Daily newswire.

When he's not working and being the world's best Dad, Nick is an avid Arsenal fan and is also a qualified Sitcom writer.

Gavin Patterson, chief markets analyst & head of data

Gavin beGavin Patterson, chief markets analyst and head of data, mobileSQUAREDcame a partner in mobileSQUARED in the summer of 2010 to help develop our mobile market intelligence business. Gavin leads our mobile market research, analysis and editorial, and has helped drive through the development of Mobile Consumer Trends - our campaign-planning and forecasting database.

Prior to joining mobileSQUARED, Gavin spent 13 years as a leading mobile industry expert - first at Baskerville Communications as Editorial Director of a stable of newsletters, and then at Informa Telecoms & Media where his roles included Principal Analyst, and Head of New Business Development and Best Practice.

During his time at Informa, Gavin helped launch a number of new research services looking specifically at technology developments and the regional mobile markets, including the creation of a number of on-line databases.

Before moving into telecoms, Gavin was a senior business journalist in Asia, including stints as the Business Editor of the Hongkong Standard and the Financial Editor of the Eastern Express.

Jo Lane, events director

Jo Lane, events director, mobileSQUARED

Jo manages mobileSQUARED's portfolio of events, liaising with venues and sponsors to ensure things run seamlessly.

Prior to being a 'SQUARED' Jo spent 13 years working in communications and marketing roles  - including global media and advertising agencies ZenithOptimedia, Starcom and Burkitt DDB, and full service B2B marketing agency dnx - where she managed global communications planning for clients such as Toyota Lexus, Puma, Seiko, Calvin Klein, John Lewis and Oracle, amongst others.

She also enjoyed a brief stint working in higher education marketing, attracting students from Europe, Asia and South America to study in the UK, which involved frequent travel to the Far East - a tough job but someone had to do it!

Caroline Baldwin, reporter & researcher

Caroline Baldwin, reporter and researcher, mobileSQUAREDCaroline is responsible for researching and writing news analysis and feature articles for the website, access: mobile newsletter and weekly alert. When not frantically putting stories to bed, she also plays an integral role in the research projects for clients, and ensuring mobileSQUARED's database, Mobile Consumer Trends mobile market data is up-to-date.

Trained in the world-renowned Centre for Journalism Studies at Cardiff University, she holds both a B.A. Hons degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism. From which Caroline also gained in-depth experience in the online sphere, including blogging, social networking, video and podcasting.

A keen ‘foodie’ Caroline has an avid interest in local produce, enjoying visiting farmers’ markets and discovering local specialities and cooking herself. She keeps a food blog, Back To The Roots, which looks at whether organic and local produce are worth the higher price tags.

She is also a film fanatic and G&T enthusiast.
